Michael is a Doctor of Public Health with over 25 years experience leading community programs relating to children’s health and human rights. He was a student of R.D. Laing in the seventies, and spent some years in Laing’s therapeutic communities in London. As a public health researcher in the 1980s, he worked extensively in Africa for the United Nations, and later the Red Cross. He then joined the research faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, where he taught masters and doctoral students, and led large-scale research projects. One of these was The Wellness Guide, a statewide project to provide basic information on a wide range of health-related issues to diverse communities all over California. Another was a huge inquiry into the conditions of California’s children and their environments.
During these years, he was a pioneer of participatory research – in which those being researched play an active role in the design and implementation of the research – and he has published a number of papers in this field.

In 2000, Michael moved to Santa Fe, where he now writes, works as a consultant for state agencies and local non-profit organizations. A lifelong student of yoga and meditation, he also teaches a wave form called yogaia. At Southwestern College, he teaches research – the art of exploration. Michael is the father of two adult sons.
