Several years ago I introduced a speaker on Infant Mental Health at our Transformation & Healing Conference at Southwestern College. While I was certain that this was a perfectly fine area of clinical practice, I had pretty much no interest whatsoever, and was not at all clear how on earth one did psychotherapy with pre-verbal infants. I would listen for a few minutes, and then leave for the remaining few hours and do something useful.
Within fifteen minutes I was totally mesmerized by the presentation. I was appropriately embarrassed to realize that “Infant Mental Health” did not exactly involve “doing psychotherapy with infants”, but instead had a whole lot to do with providing psycho-educational services, teaching and training to parents and caregivers of infants. When parents learn about attachment theory, brain development and other related topics critical to the healthy development of infants, the kid stands a whole heck of a lot better chance of growing into a healthy, toddler, child, adolescent, and adult.
By the end of the presentation, it was abundantly clear to me that nobody on the planet earth should be allowed to have a child until they had heard this presentation. This was mind-blowing stuff.
And I came to learn that the field of Infant Mental Health is growing at a tremendous rate. If we as a culture could really get this clinical specialty up and running we could prevent unbelievable emotional, sociological, familial, and financial costs later in life, when problems are much more ingrained, and difficult to work with.
That is why the New Earth Institute of Southwestern College is so excited to be offering this certificate, starting in the Fall Quarter of 2014. It is going to give a huge training and career advantage to our students, and to anybody who completes the training. Click here to visit the web site for the certificate program. Stay tuned, and give this some thought. It’s a great way to make your impact on the world, starting from the beginning of life…
