Let me give you a few tips.
If you really want to save money, or if paying for graduate school seems impossible, or if the idea of paying more for a highly designed and intentional holistic graduate education in Counseling or Art Therapy makes you crazy, you should go to Highlands, or to UNM. They are cheaper. Or the place near you in Philly, or Portland, or Milwaukee, or wherever you happen to be.
But remember, in the case of, say, medications, the active ingredient of generics is the same as in the designer drug. But that is not how it works in graduate programs. The “active ingredient” is unbelievably different.
So, you might even consider not getting a master’s degree at all. That would be cheaper yet. There are jobs in the world that do not require a master’s degree or a license, and maybe you are better suited to one of them. A lot of people are.
We all have to decide how we are going to live our lives. Whether we are going to say Yes, or whether we are going to say No, when big opportunities arise.
Example: I have traveled a LOT in my life. From the time I was 15. Many trips to Europe, trips to North Africa, India, another trip to India this coming December.
I know people my age who are retired, out golfing, have a house way bigger than mine, drive a Benz, have a boat. They chose to play life close to the vest and cash in later, with “stuff”, instead of with photos of their wedding in Jaipur, or skiing in Switzerland, or New Year’s Eve in Barcelona, Dublin, Istanbul, Cologne, Prague, Rome, San Francisco. If I could cash all those trips in, I would have a much bigger financial portfolio than I do. But it was clear to me at age 15 that that was not how I was going to roll. And I never did.
I just wasn’t made that way.
But good for the guy with the boat and the stuff. I hope that was the correct decision for him. Neither way is the “right way.” Southwestern College is not “right”, and UNM, Highlands or some other mainstream Art Therapy school “wrong.”
But they are very different. And the differences in how your life goes, and how your consciousness develops, depending on which choice you make, will be huge.
Just be sure you know why you are going where you are going.
Don’t get this one wrong. It is too big to get wrong.
