“Having Fun With Numerology”
I am not an adept at numerology, but I have dabbled in it. As a symbol system that utilizes the archetypal knowledge of numbers, I find it fascinating. So it is not surprising that the other day, as I was driving down San Felipe Road past our new counseling center, Tierra Nueva, I noted the address posted for the first time on the adobe wall.
According to the pattern of numerology, you add each digit until you arrive at a numeral from 1-9. Only the master numbers are not reduced to a single digit. The master numbers are represented by doubling a digit, for example 11, 22, 33, etc. So as I drove slowly past, I added up the numbers of the new street address, 3952 San Felipe Road: 3 + 9 + 5 + 2 = 19. Then 1 + 9 = 10. Then 1 + 0 = 1.
The numerology for our new building is based on the number One! Powerful. This counseling center will serve as a starting point, a beginning, for those who enter its doors seeking to change their lives. This place will become a catalyst for personal transformation. The focus will be on the individual life path. The revelation will be the tremendously energetic statement of creation, the jubilant, I AM!
One is a perfect number for our new building. We have dedicated this property to the service of others. We have borrowed money, spent time and energy designing and building a place of beauty to serve our community and our students. We have manifested a dream, which will be here for many years to come. It is definitely a number One!
Then I became curious. What is the numerological archetype of our campus? I quickly added the numerals of the street address for 3960 San Felipe Road. 3 + 9 + 6 + 0 = 18. Then I added together those two numbers: 1 + 8 = 9.
The campus is a Nine! This is the number of soul completion. What a potent number for the location of our library, art studio, classrooms and offices. Our mission is transforming consciousness through education. Nine is the number that marks the ability to accept the past, forgive, and clear the accumulated karma. Nine is the number of the soul’s burning desire for freedom. It represents compassion and connection with all. It is the song of loving truth. It is the acknowledgement that, WE ARE!
Between the numbers one and nine, the whole life journey unfolds. As we work toward inner freedom, we spark new beginnings. So it makes sense that right next door to each other on the expanding campus of Southwestern College, we have the number One, the first spark of consciousness expressed in the “I Am,” and the number Nine, the final awareness of enlightenment expressed in the “We are.” What fertile ground for life learning. These creative archetypes will bookend our daily practice of becoming.
I imagine us moving back and forth between the new Tierra Nueva Counseling Center and the main campus engaging directly with both the Alpha and the Omega. Perhaps this reference to the divine will remind us of the sacred nature of our own lives and of the work we do here together.
