Applying to Counseling Program

Embarking on a journey toward a MA in Counseling at Southwestern College is an exciting step toward a fulfilling career in the helping professions. Here is a clear guide to assist you in the application process. 

1. Academic Prerequisites

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

 The College recognizes the importance of life experience, letters of recommendation and personal motivation as indicators of academic readiness and success in the counseling field. These factors, along with a personal statement which describes professional and educational goals and intentions, enhance the likelihood of admission.

• Psychology coursework: You will need to complete at least three courses which is 9 semester credits in psychology covering
• Abnormal Psychology
• Developmental Psychology 
• One psychology elective of the applicant’s choice

Aim for a grade of “C” or better is required in each course. If you have engaged in community service, the psychology elective requirement can be waived.

2. Application Components

   To apply, please prepare and submit the following materials:

• Degree Application
• $50 application fee
• Résumé – Provide an updated resume detailing educational background, work experience and relevant skills.
• Official transcripts – arrange for official transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended to be sent electronically to admissions@swc.edu or via snail mail to SWC Enrollment Services, 3960 San Felipe Rd., Santa Fe, NM 87507.
• Submit two emails of references inside the application  (1 professional and 1 academic, or 2 professional recommendations). An email link will be sent to your references and they will complete a reference form for you. 
• A three-page personal statement including the following: 
  • Your professional and academic interests and goals
  • Personal qualities, including strengths and areas for growth
  • Life experiences that have led you to pursue this degree
  • Examples of how you’ve provided service to others
  • Reflections on how this program aligns with your aspirations.
  • If you could enact any change in your current professional environment, what would it be?

Application Submission

Once your application has been “submitted” it will be reviewed and the admissions team will determine on whether to invite you for an admissions interview.  All applicants must have an interview with a member of the Admissions staff in order to be accepted into the program. Due to the applied and holistic nature of the program, your presentation of self, including communication and reflective skills in the admissions interview, are critical factors in the determination of acceptance. 

Note: Many Master’s degree students choose a certificate specialty program. If you are interested in any of these programs please contact the Director of Admissions. You can apply to to a program either before or after you begin classes at Southwestern College.
