The M.A. in Art Therapy for clinical professionals is a two year, distance program designed for those who have graduated with a M.A. in Counseling, a M.A. in Social Work or a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology.
Art and Healing has been in existence from the beginning of humankind, and it does not take an artist to be an art therapist! We only need the six studio art classes as well as your Masters degree for this program. Some of the studio art can be taken concurrently with the program as well.
What many do not know is that there is coursework to be credentialed as an art therapist that entails ethics, multicultural art therapy, art therapy techniques, art therapy theories and so. There is a wealth of information on the field and this program will introduce you to the knowledge and skills needed to be a fully credentialed art therapist.

The Master’s program in Art Therapy/Counseling emphasizes the use of the visual arts as a therapeutic approach in clinical, educational, community and rehabilitation settings. While visual arts is the primary therapeutic modality, the creative process may be supported by classroom instruction and experiences in the use of drama, movement and music therapy. SWC also offers opportunities in Sandplay/Sandtray therapy.
